Updated: 08 March, 2026
What to do and see in Molėtai?
Lithuania is so small, but how rich it is! Rich in its regional parks, museums, and manors. And how many observation towers have sprouted up! Although we have visited the Molėtai region more than once, look, something new has appeared again. So we get in the car and drive towards Molėtai. There really is something to see in Molėtai :)
Moletai Observatory and Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology
Our first stop is the Molėtai Observatory and the Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology . This is a truly impressive building, which houses a scientific observatory for scientists and a museum for us - curious people. We climb the stairs to the top, where each tier presents a different part of the history of the sky. The first exposition tells about the ethnic connection with the sky, on the second tier we see various devices, some of which resemble tools with which people tried to measure and still measure celestial bodies. Having climbed even higher, we touch the history of cosmonautics and discover the connection between man and space. We learn about planets, stars, clusters. Finally, we reach the highest point, where the largest telescope in Northern Europe is located. True, a large telescope is not necessary to admire the views of the most lake-filled region of Lithuania. During the day, you can learn about the history of the world's cosmos at the Ethnocosmology Museum, and at night (but only on a clear night) you can look up at the sky for yourself.
Labanoras Regional Park – educational trails, numerous lakes and places to visit
We rush to Labanoras Regional Park , whose administrative building houses a natural exposition, and offers hiking, cycling and water routes. Labanoras Park is dominated by pine trees and lakes. Here you can find as many as 285 lakes, and where there are also winding streams - as many as 30 of them. But we didn't come here just to count the lakes and streams. We visited the Linas Verdenė spring, which, according to legend, healed the sick and has a sacred meaning. Midsummer and equinoxes were celebrated here. This spring never freezes, so you will always find it when you arrive. We climbed the Kačeniškė hillfort, which is surrounded by water - Mergežis Lake with swamps. They say that when the lake freezes, the ice looks red. Legend has it that once three maidens drowned in the lake. Elks, wolves and even lynxes roam the Labanoras Forest. After a walk and getting hungry, we stop by the town of Labanoras, where unique buildings and a distinctive way of life have been preserved. The regional park is truly rich, so we will have to come back and visit other proposed objects:
- The Nalšia Museum houses a collection of various tools, historical, natural and craft exhibits. There is a collection of banknotes and coins, and unique stones are kept.
- Cirkliškis Manor Palace, built by Edvardas Mostovskis according to the design of a guest architect from Vienna.
- Kaltanėnai town with its manor and church.
- Plains Observation Tower.
- Sirveta Regional Park, where the story of mythology begins and continues in the nearby Mythology Park.
Žalvaris Park – exclusive exhibits
Molėtai surprises us not only with its lakes, but also with the strange Žalvaris Park. Various exhibits are located in a huge meadow. The basis of many of them is iron, but other materials are also indispensable. The horses that seem to have escaped from the war and stayed here left a great impression. They flutter with their white sheets like ghosts from the past. An outdoor cinema with unique seats has been set up in the fields - old amusement park cars. The iron cow smiles at us, and we ourselves laughed when we went to the house of crooked mirrors. Robinson's house, Diogenes' barrel and other strange exhibits await everyone who wants to see Molėtai from a different angle.
Radziwill Palace at Dubingiai Castle Site
Molėtai suggested that we also visit Dubingiai Castle, where the remains of the Radziwill Palace are hidden. Although the rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania once lived here and fought against the Teutonic Knights, today we can only see the basements, walls and floor fragments of the former Radziwill Palace. We did not expect that we would travel through Lithuanian history in such an interactive way. After downloading the app, we could see how the Radziwill Palace looked before, what our archaeologists discovered, and dive headlong into the history of the nobles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Molėtai Technical Museum – an exhibition of vintage cars and other equipment
Continuing our journey, we reach the Molėtai Technical Museum. In the museum, you can take a ride on an old bus, touch and examine vintage trucks, cars, and motorcycles. Here we return to the times when cars were small and angular, and the air conditioner in buses was an open window. After exploring the wheeled exposition, the Molėtai Technical Museum offers to get acquainted with the history of radio and TV equipment. Just don't expect to see widescreen TVs, the Molėtai Technical Museum will remind you of where it all began.
Alanta Manor – art gallery, library and celebration venue
Although Molėtai is now a relatively small town, the Alanta Manor stands here, reminding us that once upon a time, people of high society lived here, and life was bustling. Not only the manor, but the entire complex of buildings has survived to this day. So it is interesting to walk around in the summer and enjoy the chirping of birds, and in the fall to walk through the colorful palette of rustling leaves. Until the First World War, the manor belonged to Tadeusz Pac-Pomarnack, later the government divided it into plots. And there was something to divide, because the manor was luxurious, with a noticeable Chinese style. Alanta Manor had rooms for tea, portraits of family ancestors, luxurious curtains, and parquet. Later, the Alanta Manor housed an agricultural school, an elementary school, a shop, a farm office, and finally, teachers and students lived there. The palace gradually emptied and became more well-maintained. Currently, an art gallery is constantly open here, you can celebrate your holidays, and a library has been established on the second floor.
Mindūnai (Labanoras) observation tower in the Moletai district
When traveling around Lithuania, it is a must to visit observation towers. This time we climbed the Molėtai observation tower. Located on the edge of Labanoras Forest, it boasts the second highest in Lithuania and offers a wonderful view of Lake Baltėjie Lakajai. On the other side of the observation deck, you will see a green coniferous forest. In order to see the most picturesque landscape of Lakajai in Aukštaitija, you will have to climb as many as 214 steps. The tower itself resembles a torch of eternal fire or a young tree among the inhabitants of the old forest. In stronger winds , the Molėtai observation tower can sway quite unusually and standing on it can become uncomfortable, but there is nothing to fear, the tower is firmly held by a foundation weighing 1,000 tons.
Moletai Sculpture Park on the shore of the lake
Molėtai is proud of its natural wonders, but the town itself has something to boast about – the Molėtai Sculpture Park. This park was the idea of two artists – Dalia Cibauskaitė and Vygintas Čeikauskas. They wanted to spread art, so in 1998 they founded the Molėtai Sculpture Park near Lake Pastovis. On the outskirts of the town you will see a wooden Wicker Man, cement boats floating on the lake and you can drink water from a drop-shaped stone. The park preserves sculptures by Polish, Welsh, French and Lithuanian architects.
Dubingiai Stud Farm – a unique place for recreation and entertainment
After a wealth of experiences, Molėtai offers a unique place for relaxation – Dubingiai Stud Farm with all its entertainment and amenities. Here you can enjoy horses both while having dinner in the restaurant and relaxing on the outdoor terraces. Three lakes surround the unusually shaped manege, and a forest rises above. Here you will find peace, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. Dubingiai Stud Farm is not only located in a wonderful location, but the architecture of the manege is also perfectly suited for relaxation. Cozy lighting, unique wooden roof structures and a building where everything fits under one roof:
- stables,
- restaurant,
- hotel
- manege.
If you are staying here for a few days or coming with your little ones, be sure to visit the mini zoo, which is home to alpacas, fallow deer and mouflons, beautiful deer, mini horses and ponies resembling plush toys, goats, sheep, ostriches. You will be surprised by the never-before-seen chicken species and rabbits running around the meadows. It is the perfect corner of peace that helped us relax after an intense trip.
There is something to see in Molėtai both in summer and winter!
