From the very first days, long lines of visitors and cars stretched out. The treetop walk became the most visited tourist attraction in the country at the beginning of its operation. It is estimated that more than 10,000 guests visited it during the first weekend of its opening. When it opened, it was the first structure of its kind in the Baltic States and one of the largest in all of Eastern Europe.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE TREE CANOPY TRAIL

The entire infrastructure for visitors consists of:

  • Treetop walkway, height reaches 21 meters. Length - 300 meters.
  • Observation tower. Height – 34 meters.
  • Information center with souvenir shop.

The administrator of the complex is Anykščiai Regional Park.

The beginning of the trail is on a hill near the Puntukas stone. On the way from the information center to the beginning of the trail, there are six educational stops introducing the trees and the natural and cultural value - the Puntukas boulder. After passing Puntukas, you need to climb the hill, at the top of which is the entrance to the trail. After crossing the entrance, a metal path begins, winding through the treetops. The safety of visitors on the trail is ensured by high railings and reliable structures. Throughout the journey, guests are accompanied by excerpts from the poem "Anykščiai šilelis" and are surrounded by traditional trees growing in Lithuania - spruces, aspens, maples, oaks, pines, and black alders. After completing the entire trail, there is an observation tower at the end of it, from which a view opens up of the Anykščiai šilelis described by Antanas Baranauskas, the Šventoji River, and the Church of St. Apostle Evangelist Matthew, located in the Anykščiai resort, and its tallest towers in Lithuania.

TREE CANOPY PATH DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The amount of support was 2.5 million euros. Construction work on the Lajų trail began in October 2014. The project was implemented at the same time as the surrounding area and access to the trail were improved.

The educational trail was designed by a team of three architects: Andrius Dirsė, Arvydas Gudelis and Alvydas Mituzas. The main architectural highlight is the national belt of the Aukštaitija region, whose rhombus-shaped motif dominates the facades of the building. The general contractor for the project was the consortium of the companies Empower-fidelitas and Ekstra statyba. As much as one and a half thousand cubic meters of concrete and almost 400 tons of metal were used for the entire building.

Up to five hundred visitors can be on the trail at a time, and 50 people at a time can be in the tower to admire the surroundings.
